Sustainability goes beyond the environment; it is also a vital part of the future of our healthcare system. During the fourth edition of the LIFE Science Conference, the theme 'Sustainability in Health(care)' takes center stage—a topic that evokes both urgency and inspiration within the life sciences and healthcare sector.
On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Forum Groningen will transform into a meeting place for professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and policymakers from the life sciences and health sector. The LIFE Science Conference is organized by the LIFE Cooperative, in collaboration with Health~Holland, the Municipality of Groningen, and NV NOM. The conference offers attendees an afternoon filled with networking opportunities, sharp pitches, the presentation of the Innovation Award, interactive panel discussions, and keynote speakers exploring the impact of innovation and the urgency of sustainability.
Inspiring speakers and current challenges
"In recent years, the LIFE Science Conference has welcomed top speakers to highlight current themes, innovations, and challenges. Nobel Prize winner Ben Feringa, Special Envoy Hans Schikan, Professor Marcel Levi, and Captain of Science Wiro Niessen have taken the stage at the conference over the past few years. 'For the fourth edition, new big names will be announced soon,' says Ronald Hesse, Director of LIFE Cooperative. Participants can expect impact makers from both within and beyond the region. Additionally, they will be inspired by surprising collaborations that redefine sustainability, along with fresh ideas that serve as the starting point for tomorrow's innovations."
Registration and nominations
This year, the program of the LIFE Science Conference will once again conclude with the presentation of the now-renowned LIFE Science Innovation Award. This award is the ultimate recognition for groundbreaking northern innovations in the life sciences & health sector. Along with the opening of conference registrations, nominations for the Innovation Award have also begun. The Innovation Award is presented to the innovation with the greatest impact in the field of Life Sciences & Health, originating from the Northern Netherlands. Companies, (knowledge) institutions, and projects can nominate themselves or others.

Van plannen maken naar resultaten boeken: dat staat centraal tijdens de vijfde LIFE Science Conference op dinsdag 22 september 2026 in Forum Groningen. De LIFE Cooperative brengt daar professionals, ondernemers, onderzoekers en beleidsmakers uit de life sciences- en healthsector samen rond één vraag: hoe vertalen we visie naar concrete impact? Keynote spreker is Peter Wennink, voormalig CEO van ASML en een van de meest invloedrijke bestuurders uit de Nederlandse technologiesector. In 2025 presenteerde hij het advies ‘De route naar toekomstige welvaart’, waarin hij pleit voor gerichte investeringen in innovatie en het verdienvermogen van Nederland.
Ruby viert op 17 april haar 1-jarig jubileum als digitale versterker in de regio. Wat begon als een ambitie, is nu een plek waar inwoners, ondernemers, studenten en partners samen werken aan één doel: digitaal meedoen mogelijk maken voor iedereen.
Een unieke samenwerking voor een urgent probleem Medicijnresten in grond- en oppervlaktewater vormen een groeiend probleem. Door vergrijzing van de bevolking en toename van chronische aandoeningen stijgt het medicatiegebruik de komende jaren flink. Dit vormt een groeiende bedreiging voor de gezondheid van de leefomgeving en mens, vooral in Noord-Nederland als één van de meest vergrijsde regio's. Wat dit project uniek maakt, is dat partijen vanuit de watertechnologiesector, Life Science & Health sector en zorgsector gezamenlijk met het mkb op zoek gaan naar innovatieve oplossingen. Onder leiding van penvoerder TCNN worden deze domeinen samengebracht met als eindresultaat een krachtige versnelling in zowel kennisontwikkeling als daadwerkelijke toepassing van innovatieve oplossingenDoelen van het project De partners richten zich, onder leiding van werkpakketleiders Water Alliance, LIFE Cooperative, CEW en UMCG, op de uitwerking van bestaande probleemgebieden. Per probleemgebied zal er gezocht worden naar mkb-bedrijven die oplossingen kunnen bieden op vier samenhangende pijlers: • Geavanceerde waterzuivering: ontwikkeling en toepassing van nieuwe technologieën om medicijnresten effectief uit water te verwijderen. • Duurzamere medicijnen en toediening: innovatie in farmaceutische producten en toedieningsvormen die minder milieubelastend zijn. • Verbetering van voorschrijfgedrag en therapietrouw medicijngebruik: bewustwording en scholing om onnodig medicijngebruik te voorkomen. • Actieve kennisdeling: intensieve samenwerking, communicatie en verspreiding van best practises binnen de regio en daarbuitenImpact na drie jaar Tijdens de kick-off benadrukten deelnemers de ambities die zij gezamenlijk nastreven: • Een structurele verbinding tussen water-, farma- en zorgsector • Meetbare vermindering van medicijngebruik door bewuster voorschrijven • Duurzaamheid als vanzelfsprekend onderdeel van medicatiegebruik en -beleid Naast deze maatschappelijke voordelen wordt er gestreefd naar het ontstaan van 75 nieuwe arbeidsplaatsen en ten minste 30 bedrijven die gericht worden ondersteund. De ontwikkelde oplossingen kunnen bovendien (inter)nationaal worden toegepast. Deze integrale aanpak maakt Noord-Nederland een landelijke en internationale koploper in de strijd tegen medicijnresten in water.Partners Het project is een samenwerking tussen: TCNN (penvoerder), LIFE Cooperative, Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis Assen, Martini Ziekenhuis, Isala Ziekenhuis, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, UMCG, Frisius MC, Water Alliance, Centre of Expertise Watertechnology (CEW), Wetterskip Fryslân, Waterschap Noorderzijlvest, Provincie Groningen, Provincie Drenthe, Provincie Fryslân, SNN en Medicijnresten uit Water Noord-Nederland.
